Et tu Mexican Coke

06-27-07_1237.jpgWhat a disappointment. Today I discovered the Mexican Coke listed a new ingredient “corn syrup and/or sugar.” (You can barely make it out in the picture.) What’s up with that? Coke bottled in Mexico was the last refuge for Coca-Cola sans corn syrup. Some of you reading this may be thinking, “it reads ‘and/or’ so it could still have sugar.” I doubt it, corn syrup is cheaper. You may also be thinking “you can’t really taste the difference can you?” To that I respond, yes you can. If you can locate a a bottle that only lists sugar, try it, and you’ll know. I guess it’s back to water with my burrito, why should I pay more to drink the same old Coke out of a bottle?

This is a sad day, indeed. High fructose corn syrup is sweeter than actual sugar. I used to drink Pepsi Edge because it was half high fructose corn syrup and half sucralose (a.k.a. Splenda), which was less sweet than the real deal. Since I used to refer to regular vs. diet as “leaded vs. unleaded,” I guess Pepsi Edge was the unpopular Flex-Fuel that used E-85 and, just like Flex-Fuel, it’s not the ultimate goal, but it’s a baby step in the right direction.

[…] Recently I wrote about how the Mexican Coke I ordered included “corn syrup and/or sugar.” Today I am glad to report that sugar only Mexican Coke is still out there. I stopped by one of my favorite burrito purveyors and decided to give the Coke in a bottle one more shot. Rejoice, sugar was the only listed sweetener (once again bad cell phone picture). So much tastier, but just as bad for me as ever. […]
